So, I know I’m probably going to do this sometime sometime soon, and I know what I want emotionally and thoughtfully and ideally as works in this…small novellas that are highly surreal yet contain a lot of emotional depth. Something that is complex, a form of magical realism that extends beyond the magical and the realism. A heightened sense of emotional complexity, a mood. A form of literary expressionism created out of symbolism and texture and characters. A very experimental series, with lots of risk taking from writers, and have it be actual risk taking, and not just playing with some forms and such. Cut up techniques and distancing techniques and negative space usage and all that, collage as novella, that sort of thing. Pushing boundaries further and further. Breaking down walls. Leaving open endings, plots that circle and go nowhere, etc, etc.
Anyway, the trick is now to get funding, and to get interesting works that fall into this ideal. The tricky part will be finding works like these. I think I might have to find writers I already know who do work like this, work I like, and solicit novellas from them. That might be the best road. Who knows? I’m not sure. But I know I like this idea a lot, and I think it would be a fun, interesting experiment.
