Tor.com’s LoTR re-read reaches the Drums in the Dark, and the battle between the Balrog and Gandalf. To be honest, when I first read LoTR (back when I was 9) I skipped most of Fellowship until I got to this point. Until then, I almost put the book down. Since then I’ve come to appreciate Fellowship more than the other three books, with this section still being my favorite (and with the Council at Elrond and the Barrow Wright and Tom Bombadil close behind).

Nah, I’m all about the Two Towers. Since I read that first. Merry and Pippin ftw!
Return of the King all the way. The Scouring of the Shire is made of pure win.
Two Towers is good, as is Return of the King. But I think for me, Followship does it because Tolkien creates so much of the backdrop of the world- the other books aren’t as heavy on the history, and I love me some made up historicity.
Not to dis Towers or Return- they still rock. Very much. Just Followship is my go to book for relaxing contemplation
