My Favorite Free Ebooks (and where you can grab ‘em)

So, last week I showed you some links to grab some free literature in ebook format. But browsing those sites can be a little like drinking from the fire hose, it’s hard to tell what’s out there and what’s good. So, today I’ll be posting some of my favorite free ebooks and links where you can grab them*. Feel free to leave your own links in the comments.  And remember, these aren’t books I just like, these are books I love to pieces:

(sorted by genre and sub-genre- loosely…I tend to fudge some of the genres):

Slipstream/Fantasy

Kelly Link – Stranger Things Happen, Magic For Beginners
Benjamin Rosenbaum – The Ant King and Other Stories

Science Fiction
Cory Doctorow – Little Brother
Charles Stross – Accelerando
HG Wells – The Time Machine, War of the Worlds

Urban Fantasy
Richard Kadrey – Butcher Bird
T.A. Pratt – Blood Engines

Mystery
William Hope Hodgson – Carnacki, The Ghost Finder
GK Chesterton – The Man Called Thursday
Arthur Conan Doyle – The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Edgar Allan Poe – Murders in the Rue Morgue
Wilkie Collins – The Moonstone

Horror
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu – Carmilla, The Evil Guest
HP Lovecraft – At the Mountains of Madness

Sword and Sorcery
Robert E. Howard: The Tower of the Elephant, The Phoenix and the Sword, The Hour of the Dragon
Edgar Rice Burroughs -  A Princess of Mars

Fantasy
Naomi Novik – His Majesty’s Dragoms
Dunsany – A Dreamer’s Tale, The Gods of Pegana, The Book of Wonder
William Morris – The Wood Beyond the World
William Hope Hodgeson – The Night Land
George MacDonald – Lilith

Children’s Literature
Lewis Caroll – Alice in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass
L. Frank Baum – Wizard of Oz
Rudyard Kipling – The Jungle Book
JM Barrie – Peter and Wendy

Folklore/Mythology
Brother’s Grimm – German Fairy Tales
Translated by Andrew Lang – Arabian Nights

*some caveats: a few of my favorite ebooks are no longer available for free download, so I don’t list those here (they include Tobias Buckell’s Crystal Rain and some others that were given away by Tor for promotional reasons as well as digital ARCS I’ve gotten from various people). Also, I might add that I own a majority of the books also listed here in print form. Mostly because I liked reading the ebook version and I wanted a physical copy to shove in my library at home.
