Taking my novel design to web 2.0

So, up until now working on my novel consisted of me mainly jotting stuff down on note cards and scraps of paper and then hoping to organize it -eventually-.  Usually -eventually- never comes, and I end up scrambling through piles of junk looking for a minor detail or plot line that I need to finish while I’m writing.  This can be a pain in the ass, espicially trying to keep all the details together and in my head.  Sometimes I can just keep it straight, but other times my notes are everything to me.

So I need something better.  For a little while I was working on a tool to help me do it online (writing it in PHP and MySQL), but due to work picking up and various projects I’ve had to shelve it for now (and hopefully return to it later).  So instead I’m starting to look for a good replacement.

Originally I looked at Google Notebook- it has the benefit of already being able to log in and use it right away, since I have a GMail account.  but the note taking features are very simplistic, and even though I can do some of the stuff I need, it doesn’t have quite the full functionality I desire.

UberNotes, OTOH, looks like it might due the trick.  Not completely on it’s own, mind you, but when combined with Mindomo and a wiki of some sort (still trying to decide how I want to do the Wiki- probably will do a local install on my webserver, but I’m not sure). I like the idea of being able to take all the information with me wherever I go- since I just bought a laptop and would like to sometime soon get a Palm Pilot or some other smaller computer for jotting down notes on the fly.

One thing I know I’m not doing is dropping MS Word.  Word 2007 is a powerhouse of an application, and the added wordcount as you type is absolutely fantastic.

I’ve been wanting Scrivener to be available on PC, because it’s organizational power seems astounding. A quick ability to make notecards and then move the notecards into flowcharts and link them to scenes and then reorganize the whole thing on the fly. Sounds like a dream, to me.

Scrivener does look amazing, but I doubt it will ever come to the PC. Ubernote is looking massively awseome, though.
